- Valkyrie Missle

To those who didn't hear, Floyd Landis, the winner of the '06 Tour De France, tested positive for significantly elevated levels of testosterone.  He tested positive on the same day he made an almost unimaginable comeback to get back into contention for the lead.  While his second sample's results haven't come back yet, it seems very suspicious.  Some analysts are already condemning him, while others are coming up with reasons why this test result may have come back positive, such as the fact that the cortisone shots Landis was taking for his degenerative hip disorder may have thrown off his endocrine system.  While I am really hoping that the positive result can be explained away, the fact that this has even come up is really depressing.  I watched every stage of the tour this year and saw the fall and comeback of Landis in stages 16 and 17.  It was some legendary stuff and was really exciting for me as a cycling fan.  To have a pall over Landis' win now really pisses me off.  Through this Tour I became a big fan of Landis and his story.  Landis came from a Mennonite family and worked through failure to make it is a professional cyclist, then rode this whole Tour with a degenerative hip disorder that is going to require replacement within the year.  His story was the type of story that Disney makes movies about.  What pisses me off about all this is that it seems like you can't have sports heroes anymore if it's a sport where drugs may help, because now anytime an athlete does something heroic the question inevitably is raised as to whether they are doping.  How can you cheer on someone that may just be great thanks to having the right pharmacist?  While I still will enjoy watching cycling and any other sports, I don't know if I'll really be able to get behind a single athlete like I could as a kid, back when I was blissfully naive...

Tonight I saw An Inconvenient Truth.  Anyone remotely interested in environmental issues should see this movie immediately if they can, it was incredibly well done, interesting, and very unsettling.
